Caretaker - Youth Centre - Beeston, Nottingham. £11 -£12 per hour - permanent after 3 months.

*Weekend work paid at £15 per hour*


PURPOSE: Responsibility for the security, cleaning, hygiene and safety aspects

of the building

RESPONSIBLE: Centre Manager

REPORT TO: Centre Manager

HOURS: 37.5 per week

SALARY: £20475-22425 + weekend lettings


General Building Responsibilities:

· Cleaning, washing, sweeping, mopping, dusting, polishing and vacuum cleaning of designated areas to the required standard.

·Emptying of litterbins etc. and removing waste to designated areas.

· Spray cleaning, scrubbing floors and re-sealing with polish, where appropriate.

· Ensuring the heating, ventilation and lighting systems work correctly and ensure that the required temperatures are maintained, reporting any defects to the Centre Manager.

· Using powered equipment where necessary (scrubbing machines, wet pick up machines, vacuum cleaners).

· Cleaning of working surfaces and other furniture as directed.

· Clearing up after flooding and/or any other emergency cleaning.

· Ensuring that the facilities in the building are prepared for groups hiring the premises, cleaning up afterwards, and securing the building after use, where necessary.

· Setting up and clearing away for Centre bookings.

· Ensuring that all the exterior hard surfaces including artificial or lawned areas are kept in a clean and tidy condition including the emptying of litter bins, the cleaning of drains and gutters, the salting and de-icing of hard surfaces during the winter months and the moving of snow to ensure access to the premises.

· Testing the fire alarm, emergency lighting systems as appropriate, ensuring that all caretaking and cleaning staff are fully aware of fire procedures and assisting with the evacuation of the building in the case of a fire alarm or bomb alert.

· Conduct PAT Testing

· To carry out porterage duties as and when required by the establishment.

· Removal of graffiti from internal and external surfaces.

· Liaise with contractors

· Monitor energy consumption, taking meter readings as and when required

· To carry out decoration programmes as required


·Ensuring ease of access to the building for both staff and public at all times, paying particular attention during adverse weather conditions.

·Ensuring entrances and grounds of the Centre, including pathways, car park area and drives are kept clean, tidy and litter free.

Security and Public Duties:

·All aspects of security including patrol routines throughout the building with particularly emphasis on facilities used by the general public.

·Responsibility for opening and closing of the building and the operation of security systems, including attending to the intruder alarm, when applicable.

· Boarding up and making secure the building following vandalism or other damage.

· When required, accompanying another member of staff to take the cash to the bank.

· Liaising with community groups, businesses and other Centre users.


· Reporting to the Centre Manager any damage/maintenance needed to the fabric of the building and equipment, noticed whilst carrying out normal duties.

·Taking reasonable care for the Health and Safety of themselves and of other persons who may be affected by their activities and, where appropriate, safeguarding the Health and Safety of all persons under their control and guidance in accordance with legislation.

·Undertake any other duties, which may reasonably be regarded as within a nature of the duties and responsibilities of the post as defined, subject to the proviso that normally any changes of a permanent nature shall be incorporated into the job description in specific terms.

· Provide emergency first aid as required

· This position will be subject to an enhanced DBS check.



1.Previous caretaking and cleaning experience, basic cleaning methods and use of equipment


3.Premises security and ability to make secure emergency repairs

4.Use of floor maintenance machines


5.Literacy and numeracy necessary to complete stock records, requisitions etc.

6. NVQ/BICS Certificate in Building Cleaning

PAT Testing Qualification


7.Knowledge and understanding of or basic training in cleaning techniques


8.Effective communication skills

9.A positive and resourceful approach to problem solving

10.Ability to work on own initiative and within a team.

11.Willingness to undertake training and train other employees as and when directed

12.To understand customer needs and provide a high standard of customer service.
