Employability Officer - £18,588 - £19,646 - SEN/SEMH College, Cranborne, Dorset

Location: Cranborne, Dorset

Salary: £18,588.34 - £19,646.50 (FTE £21,915.00 - £23,165.00)

Hours: 40 hours a week, Term Time Only

This College supports young people between the ages of 16 and 25 who have additional social, emotional and mental health needs, by preparing them for adult life and facilitating their transition into further education, training or employment.


The team prepares students for adult life, through person-centred academic and vocational study programmes leading to independent living with employment or further study. By working together, they increase resilience, confidence, self-esteem, emotional intelligence and well-being: the cornerstones on which strong and successful long-term futures are built.

The main purpose of the role:

As our Employability Assistant, you will support the Employability Co-ordinator to increase employment and volunteering opportunities for students by supporting the development of a robust network of supportive employers.

You will also support the Employability Co-ordinator to facilitate all aspects of the work experience programme.

Key duties:

  • Support the planning of students’ transition on to employment or further/higher education and independent/supported living.

  • Support the development of the college Work Experience Programme and coordinating work placements.

  • Working with Tutors and students to identify preferred work experience placements.

  • Building relationships with local businesses and enterprise community for purpose of sourcing / securing placements.

  • Support the facilitation of networking and open events at College to attract local employers and training providers.

  • To support with the planning and assessment of each work placement

  • To closely monitor student progress within each placement - liaising with student, employer, education team and Work Experience Co-ordinator

  • Working with the education and care team to ensure Employability Skills are embedded as part of curriculum.

Duties will vary, you must expect to diversify and lend a hand wherever is required.


Successful candidate qualities:

  • A passion for making better outcomes for students.

  • Good level of literacy and numeracy (must include Level 2 qualification in English and Maths)

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience of working with young people with SEN.

  • Awareness of keeping children / young people and adults safe

  • Confident, outgoing and motivated to succeed.

  • Experience of working in a similar role in careers guidance or developing employment opportunities.

  • Outstanding organisational skills

  • IT literate.

  • Ability to manage own time to deal with multiple tasks.

  • High levels of interpersonal ability with excellent written and verbal communication.

  • Able to work as part of a team.

  • Discreet, confidential and reliable.

  • Understanding of the School/College’s ethos
