Position: Higher Level Teaching Assistant with ELSA

Location: Quidenham, Norwich

Salary: £25,015.19 - £27,302.29 dependant on qualifications

Hourly rate: 14.00 - £15.28 per hour

Hours: 40 hours per week - Term Time only - Monday - Friday - 8.30am - 4.30pm (5pm on Thursday, extra half hour taken off on another day)

Qualifications/Knowledge and Experience:

Qualifications:

  • The Higher Level Teaching Assistant Diploma or equivalent Level 4 qualification, or demonstrate equivalent skill level.

  • GCSE pass above C (or 4 in the new GCSE system) in English and Maths

  • An ELSA qualification or level 5 qualification in a related subject area are desirable

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Knowledge of/experience in special educational needs, particularly autism is essential

  • Experience working with young people with emotional literacy needs is essential

  • Relevant knowledge and experience of pupils with SEN, SLD/PMLD, ADHD and ASD

  • Understanding of the Safeguarding principles and Child Protection procedures

  • Experience of managing a range of approaches to behaviour, including managing behaviours that challenge.

  • Knowledge of/experience in working with young people with trauma and attachment/ACEs is desirable

  • Experience working within education is advantageous

  • Experience of working within a multi-cultural, inclusive setting

  • Experience of supporting and liaising with complex parents

Key Duties:

Due to the continued growth of the school, they currently looking for a Higher Level Teaching Assistant with ELSA to join the team. The successful candidate will deliver interventions around emotional literacy and mental wellbeing as well as supporting the Class Teacher with all elements of the day to day running of the class and to teach whole classes, groups and individual lessons in consultation with the Class Teacher on a regular basis across a range of classes.

The school provides day placements for students aged 11 to 16 years primarily with communication and interaction difficulties or specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia. Some may be on the autistic spectrum or have anxieties and difficulties that create barriers to learning.

With small classes, a maximum of 10 students and a minimum of 3 staff per class you can focus on the needs of each student. There is a full clinical team onsite to support at all times and you will have the support of an experienced and stable SLT.


Delivering interventions:

  • Plan and deliver individualised programmes of support for children to develop their emotional literacy, including:

  • Awareness of own and other people’s emotions

  • Development of an increased range of emotional vocabulary

  • Management of stress, grief, anxiety, anger and conflict

  • Development of social interaction and friendship skills

  • Promotion of a realistic self-concept and good self-esteem

  • Coping with significant life changes including loss and bereavement

  • Developing resilience skills

Supporting Teaching and Learning:

  • To lead in the absence of any Class Teachers across the school.

  • Know and understand the Class Teacher’s curriculum planning and to plan, prepare and deliver assigned programmes of teaching and learning activities to individual, small groups and/or classes modifying and adapting activities as necessary within agreed systems of supervision.

  • To provide high quality, challenging and differentiated educational activities and experiences through teaching a broad and balanced curriculum aiming at pupils achieving their full potential in all areas of learning.

  • To provide whole-class strategies around emotional literacy including working with teachers on positive behaviour support plans, ways of developing emotional check-ins and a bank of coping strategies

  • Develop and implement individual plans for pupils (such as the educational elements in an EHCP), including attendance at, and contribution to, reviews if requested.

  • Support the role of parents/carers in pupils’ learning and contribute to meetings with parents/carers to provide constructive feedback on pupil progress/achievement etc

Pupil Welfare and Safeguarding:

  • Take responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of pupils according to the school’s policies, including safeguarding and PREVENT

  • Provide meaningful feedback on pupil behaviour, relationships and attitudes.

  • Monitor pupils conduct and behaviour throughout the learning process and intervene to resolve highly complex, difficult or very challenging issues and to keep records of incidents, health, behaviour etc. as necessary
